What your Tesla VIN tells you

Every Tesla VIN is 17 characters following the ISO 3779 standard. Those characters encode the model, the model year, the factory that built it, and the drivetrain. Here's what each part means.

Positions 1–3 (WMI)
Tesla as manufacturer and vehicle class — for example 5YJ (Model S/3, Fremont), 7SA (Model X/Y MPV), 7G2 (Cybertruck/Semi truck class), LRW (Giga Shanghai), XP7 (Giga Berlin).
Position 4 (model)
The Tesla line — S (Model S), 3 (Model 3), X (Model X), Y (Model Y), C (Cybertruck), or T (Semi).
Positions 5–8 (VDS)
Body type, restraint system, battery or fuel type, and motor / drive unit — for example dual-motor performance, LFP battery, or Plaid tri-motor.
Position 9 (check digit)
An ISO 3779 math validation that proves the VIN is real. We verify this before decoding.
Position 10 (model year)
A letter code for the model year — for example P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026.
Position 11 (factory)
Assembly plant — F = Fremont (California), A = Austin (Texas), B = Berlin (Germany), C = Shanghai (China), P = Palo Alto (Roadster).
Positions 12–17 (serial)
Unique production sequence number within that factory and model year.
